Your Next Move Is Already in Your Hands
Mid-career professionals who are ready to stop second-guessing their strategic moves and start building the authority that opens doors... This one's for you.
You’re not the only one asking, “Is it time to move?”
At The Table, we believe the best career moves start with honest conversations about what's really weighing on us.
I asked this community a few key questions — and your answers painted a powerful picture.
What’s really on our minds when we think about change?
🗣 Poll Question: “When thinking about leaving a job, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?”
Here’s what came up:
💰 Security: Finances. Health insurance. Having another job lined up.
💭 Self-Doubt: “Am I doing the right thing?” “Is this the right time?”
🔁 Legacy + Alignment: “Will my next move align with my long-term goals?” “How will this impact my family?”
✝️ Spiritual Discernment: “Is this God-ordained… or am I just tired of this place?”
These aren’t just logistics.
They’re leadership questions. And they’re valid.
Here's the deeper truth these answers reveal: We're not afraid of movement. We're afraid of making the wrong move — without a clear plan.
But here's the shift: Clarity isn't something you wait for. It's something you build.
When high-achieving professionals think about leaving, their brains go straight to logistics:
- “Do I have enough saved?”
- “Will I lose health insurance?”
- “Do I have another offer ready?”
And because they lead with safety, they end up making lateral moves that don’t actually fix the problem.
But here's what happens when you lead with logistics:
🔁 Planning only from logistics keeps you reactive.
Instead of asking: "What role will stretch me strategically and align with my vision?" Most ask: "How can I leave with the least amount of risk?"
That mindset keeps them stuck in familiar patterns, even in new places.
The numbers tell a different story:
📊 According to the latest U.S. Labor Market report, consulting and contract work are growing…
…while internal promotions remain flat across industries.
Translation: Don't just build skills for your current seat. Build visibility for the opportunities that exist beyond it.
Authority travels with you. Titles do not.
🔑 The Clarity Key
The most successful career transitions happen when you lead with intention, not logistics.
So, what should you do instead?
Here's the clarity-building process I recommend:
✅ 1. Define Your Strategic Intent Ask: "If I make this move, what will be different about my identity in 18 months?" Don't just focus on the role — focus on the ripple effect.
✅ 2. Audit Your Transition Triggers Are you leaving from resentment? Burnout? Or opportunity? Each one requires a very different exit plan.
✅ 3. Reverse-Engineer Your Runway Instead of asking "Can I afford to leave?", ask: "How can I position my current experience so my next move becomes inevitable?"
